Clarified by Robert H. VAN GULIK, the Judge Dee is a historical character of the T’ang dynasty. He lived from year 630 to year 700 of our era and was illustrated by its remarkable capacity to clear up complex criminal businesses. He had a significant influence in addition and was a statesman which marked by its intelligence and its courage this period of the Chinese History.

Robert H. VAN GULIK chose this character for the drafting of several detective novels to the Chinese " mode ". It is a particular style, in which the psychological aspect, the description of the various protagonists, the overlap of several businesses give a particular tone and very attaching to the novel. Although it is about a work of fiction, the author based himself partially on historical elements because he was a doubled remarkable sinologist of a novelist and a graphic designer of talent.

These are the elements which encouraged me to create this site, so that the Net surfers can also discover - or rediscover - this attaching man, and to make knowledge with its " lieutenants ", the henchmen of the courts of its successive stations and the men and women of China which saw it living.

May this site lead you to read or read again the investigations of the judge Dee, to enjoy this ballade in old China...
